This is perhaps the most exciting red wine selection Lidl has put into a Wine Tour.  Being Lidl's first New World focussed Wine Tour, judging by the scores from our esteemed group of tasters it's not going to be the last. We had great fun and much laughter with Lidl's Lead Taster, Richard Bampfield MW and Chris Scott Lidl's Marketing Manager for Scotland joining me to present the wines. As with the Whites (results here) the favourites our audience of wine lovers chose were not what we'd pre-guessed ourselves.  Everyone was invited to score each wine out of 5 points.

Unlike the whites, the stars amongst the reds all came from South America.  The outright winner with an average score of 4.6 points was the Argentinean Gestos Malbec & Malbec - superb value at £7.99.  Closely on its heels was the Malbec Gran Reserva - this time, perhaps surprisingly from Chile.  What we also didn't expect, given the quality, was the Axis Margaret River Cabernet to come in 6th place, although still scoring well with 3.6 points.

Here are the full results; The Winner Gestos Malbec & Malbec, Mendoza 2018, Argentina - £7.99 scoring 4.6Joint 2nd Malbec Gran Reserva, Rapel Valley 2019, Chile - £6.99 scoring 4.1 The Second Fleet Shiraz, Limestone Coast 2019, Australia - £6.99 scoring 4.14th place The Second Fleet Cabernet/Merlot/Petit Verdot, Coonawarra 2018, Australia - £6.99 scoring 3.95th place Outlook Bay Pinot Noir, Central Otago 2018, New Zealand - £9.99 scoring 3.86th place  Axis Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Western Australia 2018, Australia - £6.99 scoring 3.6 It was great to have organised this series of tastings and be so surprised by which the favourites were.  However, whatever the final placings were, all these were excellent scores.  With the majority of the wines priced at £6.99 they're certainly excellent value for money at, let's face it, a time we're all even more keen to seek out a bargain. This Wine Tour was launched on 23 July and most of the wines are, we believe, still available in store.  The next Wine Tour will launch at the end of September and we'll be holding a similar series of tastings.  If you'd like to be amongst the first to hear about the tastings I'll be holding please contact me.
