As always Lidl's Wine Tour unveils some great hidden gems and their Summer 2021 Wine Tour is certainly no exception.  There were a few familiar friends within the Tour and plenty new interesting wines to discover.  Lidl's Lead Taster and Master of Wine Richard Bampfield and I had great fun presenting these wines over the course of the two weeks.  Thankfully we kept on track by Chris Scott,  Lidl's Marketing Manager for Scotland.   We tasted 6 whites on Saturday 22 May which scored as follows;

1 Cabriz Dao Rosé, Dao, Portugal - 4.57 points2 Junge Winzer Pinot Blanc Trocken, Baden, Germany - 4.17 points3 Riesling Scheurebe Halbtrocken, Rheinhessen, Germany 4.1 points4 (joint) Broadwood’s Folly English Sparkling Wine - 4.06 points 4 (joint) Vinho Verde, Portugal - 4.09 points Sparkling Wine - 4.06 points 6 Greco di Tufo, Campagnia, Italy 3.92 points Great to see the Rosé in first place - if you like Rosé then you might like to join our Rosé tasting this Saturday.  Details here Everyone was also asked which wines surprised them most.  Interestingly the following four wines came equal favourites as the surprises - good news for Germany; Cabriz Dao Rosé, Dao, Portugal Broadwood’s Folly English Sparkling WineJunge Winzer Pinot Blanc Trocken, Baden, GermanyRiesling Scheurebe Halbtrocken, Rheinhessen, Germany Finally everyone was asked which they'd be most likely to buy again.  The Riesling Scheurebe came out as the favourite, closely followed by the Rosé, Broadwoods Folly and Junge Winzer Pinot Blanc. Onto the 6 reds which we tasted on Saturday 29 May these scored as follows;

1  Second Fleet Limestone Coast Shiraz, Australia 4.33 points2  Vis-a-Vis Shiraz Mourvedre, South Africa 4.31 points3  Faugères Domaine Coudogno, France 4.1 points4  Chianti Colli Senesi, Italy 3.91 points5  CEO Mencia, Bierzo, Spain 3.75 points6  Merlot Gran Reserva, Rapel, Chile 3.58 points Interestingly the wine which surprised people the mostby a long way was the Vis-a-Vis Shiraz Mourvedre.  This was followed by the CEO Mencia and the Merlot which was also surprising since both these wines were only scored in 5th and 6th place overall. All the wines scored highly with regards to which people would buy again with the joint equal wines being the Second Fleet Shiraz and the Vis-a-Vis ShirazMourvedre.  This was followed in joint 3rd and 4th places again by the CEO Mencia and the Merlot! Our next Lidl Wine Tour series of tastings will be on Saturday 24th and Saturday 31st July.  Find out more and join us here
